Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Climbers up to 30 m long or scandent shrubs or shrubby trees.

Stems: With recurved prickles on young branches and leaf rachises.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves compound. Alternate. Leaves with 3–9(–11) pairs of pinnae, leaflets 6–9(–12) pairs per pinna, opposite or subopposite, narrowly ovate to elliptic–oblong, 0.8–6.5 cm long, 0.5–3 cm wide. Apex acute to subobtuse. Base rounded. Petiolate. Stipules large and leafy, pinnate, segments 3–5, ovate,10–25 mm long.

Flowers: Flowers in axillary to supra-axillary racemes, in Hawai‘i usually without serial buds. Flowers caesalpinaceous, unisexual (pistillate flowers seemingly bisexual (perfect), but anthers sterile), 8–10 mm in diameter, bracts caducous, bracteoles absent. Calyx tube short, 5-lobed, hood-like. Corolla of 5 petals; petals yellow or upper one orange at base, 7–8 mm long. Stamens 10, distinct, alternately longer and shorter. Ovary superior.

Fruit: Pods dehiscent; flattened; slightly swollen; 6.5–9 cm long; 3.5–5 cm wide; armed with prickles 5–10 mm long. Seeds 1(2); pale gray or olive gray when ripe; transversely arranged; ovoid to subglobose; 15–20 mm in diameter.

Ploidy: 2n = 24

Habitat: Occurring in dry; mostly open; disturbed areas.

Elevation Range: 15–230 m.
